To some, they are creepy crawlers. But to botanist and entomologist Bob Allen, arthropods are “buggy and beautiful” and will be the topic of a free lecture scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Back Bay Science Center.

Allen, who also is a nature photographer, will present “Common Arthropods of Orange County” as part of the Orange County Natural History Lecture Series. To make a reservation, call (949) 644-3038.

Allen grew up in San Juan Capistrano studying insects and plants, then blended the two interests by studying pollination. He teaches nature photography workshops, and his photographs and illustrations have appeared in scientific publications and natural history field guides. He is author of the “Field Guide to Wildflowers of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains.”

The Back Bay Science Center is located at 600 Shellmaker Road in Newport Beach. The gates will open at 6:30 pm.
