Police continue to search for a man who knocked on the door of a Corona del Mar house, asked for directions, then pistol-whipped the homeowner before running away.
The attack occurred just after 11 a.m. Wednesday when a man knocked on the woman’s door in the 2900 block of Setting Sun Drive, which is above Harbor View Elementary School. The man pretended he was looking for an address where he was to look at a bike for sale, but police say that was a ruse to rob the woman. He left, then returned a few minutes later and lured the woman from the house. When she was outside, pointing to the address, the man tried to force her back into the home. Her screams alerted a neighbor, who yelled. The man hit the woman, possibly with a pistol, and fled on foot.
The man was about 5-feet-9 with a slim build, possibly with a mustache, Hartford said. The victim said he was Hispanic or Italian but spoke with no accent, and he wore a darke baseball cap, a blue and green shirt and dark trousers.
Police said residents should be alert when they answer the door because it could be a robber or a burglar, casing your home.
If a stranger knocks, police say to acknowledge you are home without opening the door, make use of a peephole with a minimum of 190-degree view, bring a phone with you to the door, and to call police if anything seems suspicious. Be prepared to give police a description, and to explain your suspicions. The non-emergency number is (949) 644-3717.
