Hobie Shop Opens In Corona del Mar

Hobie Surf Shop has opened its doors in Corona del Mar, six months after the Becker shop quietly went out of business.

“We felt the store was ready to go,” said Jake Schwaner, general manager. So at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, as soon as the computers were up and running, they opened the doors and began selling merchandise.

“People have been coming in every day, asking if we were open,” Schwaner said. “It was great to finally get things going.”

The shop sells surf boards, accessories, clothes and other surf-related items. Today, a few women in the shop asked where the kids’ clothes are.

“We’ll have clothes down to toddler sizes,” Schwaner said. But right now, they are still getting stock and setting things up. “We’re still getting it going.”

Customers have been stopping in steadily, he said, with everyone saying, “Welcome back!” and “Glad to see you back!”

“Everyone has been so nice and friendly,” said manager Whitney Rose. “It’s fun.”

The shop’s merchandise is similar to Becker’s, but the space has been remodeled with a brighter, more airy feel. The checkout counter is now in the center of the shop, and the counter and shelves and racks are filled with brightly colored displays of perfumes and local products like Sanuk and Twistbands.

The shop’s official grand opening will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, with music by DJ Peanut Butter Wolf and food provided by the Kogi BBQ truck.

Hobie is located at 3140 East Coast Highway.

No mention of the prior CdM Hobie store? Or the history behind Hobie?

Here's more from Hobie President Mark Christy: "Yes, there was a Hobie Shop in CDM for roughly 30 years. It was located in the middle of the block on the ocean side of PCH but I cannot recall the cross streets. Today it is a rug store and may even (much to my chagrin) still say Hobie on the side of the neighboring building on the roof... "The former Hobie CDM was owned by R.B. Alexander and his partner Mike (cannot recall his last name). In it's heyday, it was one of the best ski shops in OC and I always bought my equipment up there. But, times changed and the guys decided to hang it up a few years back. They offered it to us, but I asked myself 'If it weren't already there, would I ever open a Hobie shop in that location?' In terms of visibility and ease of parking, the answer was no, so we kept looking. Plus, given how we like our stores to look and feel, it would have taken quite a bit of work to bring it up to speed so we would have effectively started over anyway. "Now that 3140 E. PCH (formerly Becker) has worked out, I'm really glad we waited. And the great thing is, many of the residents have been coming in saying how glad they are Hobie is back in town. Mike and RB were pretty cool guys and took very good care of their loyal customers. I can promise that we will uphold that tradition with Hobie customers old and new as they discover we're back in town. And I must say, the CDM people and families that have been coming in are incredibly nice and are passionate about their lifestyles and the town they call home. Obviously, it was a bit of a gamble to open up a new shop in this economic environment, but based on the people we are meeting, I am STOKED the Hobie tradition is back in CDM."

Hobie has always been an industry leader but still kept it's soul. The shop in Dana Point has an incredible collection/museum of historic surfboards. I'm stoked to see Hobie take over that shop space!
