Newport Beach lifeguards said 25,000 visitors were on area beaches on Saturday and 40,000 on Sunday, enjoying 70-degree water and 4-6 foot surf.

Lifeguards rescued 48 people on Saturday, 25 people on Sunday, and had more than 2,000 preventative actions and 95 first aid incidents over the weekend, said Jennifer Schulz, a Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman.

“The South swell and Southern Hemisphere swell of the weekend has diminished greatly today,” she said, adding that the swell possibly will pick up Friday afternoon into Saturday.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Harbor Patrol deputies on Saturday had two calls to ask people to get off the West jetty, which was closed due to high surf, according to online logs.
