Memorial Day Draws 275,000 to Beaches

Sunny weather drew 275,000 people to Newport Beach beaches over the three-day weekend, beating last year’s crowds by about 25,000 visitors.

On Saturday, there were 90,000 beach visitors, four rescues, 291 preventative actions and 606 public assistance reports. On Sunday, there were 90,000 visitors, six rescues, 288 preventative actions and 1,051 public assistance reports. And on Monday, there were 95,000 visitors, five rescues and 362 preventative actions and 873 public assistance reports, said Jennifer Schulz, a spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department, which oversees lifeguard operations.
