A little girl abducted by her mother was found safe in Los Angeles less than an hour ago, Newport Beach police said.

“A citizen who had observed the AMBER Alert related to this incident called the LAPD to report a sighting of the vehicle,” police said in a statement. The girl, 4, “was in good health and appeared to be unharmed (and) will most likely be returned to her foster parents,” the statement said.

The mother, 34, lost custody of the child following a mental health evaluation in Costa Mesa in March, and the girl was placed into foster care. The mother is accused of abducting her daughter while having dinner in a Fashion Island restaurant about 6:35 p.m. Friday. The woman asked the foster father if she could take her to the restroom. The foster father called police after 10 minutes passed with no sign of them, and a statewide AMBER alert was issued.

A resident who heard the AMBER alert saw the woman’s car and called police at 2:45 p.m. today. Los Angeles police will return the woman to Orange County to face criminal charges, the statement said.
