More than two dozen names of teachers and counselors from Corona del Mar High School and Middle School, as well as Lincoln and Harbor View elementary schools, are on a layoff list to be approved this afternoon at a special Board of Education meeting.
To see the complete list, click here. Go down the agenda to VII and click Item 1 (Consideration and Adoption of Resolution 40-05-10 to Reduce Certain Certificated Services and Send Final Notices of Layoff to Respondents), then go to the bottom of the page to “Supporting Documents” and download the resolution.
Layoffs on the list include Camy Boehling, who teaches CdM Middle School Spanish.
“Her layoff would limit middle school enrollment in Spanish — severely,” said Tory LeVitre, Corona del Mar High School teacher and union representative, in an email.
The school’s counseling offices will be decimated, she added, with Erica Norgren Allison Lent, Sarah Miller, Arianna Garcia and Julie Bentwood all on the list.
“This will severely limit the counselors who ‘know’ the kids (only one left),” she said.
“Who will write your college recommendation letter without your counselor there??” asks a Facebook page set up to try to save the counselors’ jobs. “Who will conduct your individual senior meeting to review your college portfolio and give you advise (sic)? Who will give you college guidance and answer all your questions?” The group as of today has 630 members.
A math and English teacher also were on the district list.
The elementary schools had more than a dozen teachers on the list. Harbor View principal Charlene Metoyer said districtwide changes in teacher-to-student ratios — from 20:1 to 24:1 — will alter how many teachers Harbor View needs next fall.
“That will change what our staff looks like,” she said.
The layoffs will not take effect until the start of school next fall.
The meeting will take place at 4 p.m. in the District Education Center – Roderick H. MacMillian Board Room at 2985-A Bear St. in Costa Mesa.
In March, teachers organized a protest against the layoffs; read our story here.
