1. Monday is Memorial Day — why not take the time to honor the soldiers who served our country? The American Legion is hosting a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Pacific View Memorial Park with a performance by the Mountain Fifes and Drums group. The ceremony will be at 3500 Pacific View Drive; arrive early to find parking on nearby streets.

2 . Roger’s Gardens has a full weekend planned for local gardening fans. At 9 a.m. Saturday, “Incredible Edibles by Monrovia Nursery” will explain how to grow fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs in a beautiful setting by mingling the edibles with vines, shrubs and perennials. Nicholas Staddon will offer tips on the best plants and plans for your garden. Later, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dan Hinkley will lead an off-site lecture called “On the Discovery of New Plants for our Gardens.” Hinkley is one of the world’s leading plant explorers, and he’s traveled in China, South and Central America, Mexico, Vietnam and more, earning him honors and awards throughout the world. The event requires reservations and costs $25, which will benefit California horticulture scholarships and research. Call (949) 640-5800 to sign up or for more information. And at 9 a.m. Sunday, you can attend “In My Edible Garden,” a monthly discussion led by Steve Hampson, “edible gardener extraordinaire,” who will talk about what, where and when to plant, prune, feed and harvest. Roger’s Gardens is located at 2301 San Joaquin Hills Road; call (949) 640-5800 for more information.

3. If you have playoff fever, you’re not alone. The Lakers play at 5:30 p.m. in Arizona; watch the game with other fans at The Place at 2920 East Coast Highway.

4. Celebrate the unofficial start of summer…at the beach.

5. Or by shopping sales. Jack’s Surfboards in Corona del Mar Plaza is having a sidewalk sale; click here for more information.
