City Activates “Do Not Solicit” Registry

The City of Newport Beach today made a registry available for residents who don’t want solicitors knocking on their doors.

The registry, available for sign ups here, asks for your name and other information, but solicitors will see only the address where they are not supposed to go.

“The Do Not Knock list runs calendar year to calendar year,” the city’s website says. “On December 31, one year ends and residents will need to sign up again in January of the next year.”

The City Council voted earlier this spring to add the registry in response to complaints from residents about aggressive solicitors. Many residents wanted to change the municipal code so solicitors would be banned after sundown, but First Amendment concerns leave the hours of solicitation from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents who don’t want solicitors are encouraged to have a No Solicitors sign in front of their house in addition to signing up for the registry. Solicitors can download the list on the city’s website under the Business tab, in the Solicitors section.

As of 12:20 p.m. today, two residents had signed up — both in Corona del Mar.
