Newport Beach police have released more details on two felony cases from the weekend.

One case involved a U.S. Marine who was arrested on suspicion of aiming a laser at an aircraft. According to police, the incident occurred at 1:58 a.m. Saturday, when the police helicopter, Eagle, was flying over the Back Bay. A crew member noticed someone targeting the helicopter with a green laser light, and as it flew toward the source, the laser targeted it again over Fashion Island, said Lt. Craig Fox.

“The helicopter was targeted a third time near San Joaquin Hills Road at MacArthur,” Fox said. Police tracked the laser to a second-floor apartment balcony in the 1600 block of Marguerite Avenue, and the 19-year-old suspect was arrested. The crew was unharmed, Fox said.

The burglary case occurred at 11:44 p.m. Friday on Gondoliers Bluff in Newport Coast, Fox said, and involved a suspect being bitten by a police dog.

The incident began when residents of the home awoke to the sound of their alarm system indicating that someone opened an exterior door, Fox said.

“When the resident yelled downstairs, they heard the sound of items being knocked over,” he said. The residents called police and fled the home to wait for help.

Newport Beach officers, along with officers and one canine from the Huntington Beach Police Department arrived, Fox said, and the dog found the suspect downstairs. While police were taking the man into custody, the dog bit the suspect, Fox said. The man was treated at an area hospital.

“The suspect, who appeared to somewhat intoxicated, claimed he thought he had entered a friend’s house,” Fox said. “It appears the suspect was able to defeat a lock on a set of French doors to gain entry.”

Nothing appeared to be stolen, Fox said.
